Pear Diary

2024

Have added a second tree to the Conference pear that has been in the garden since shortly after moving in, this time a Williams pear, sent by Ma as part of a fruit tree collection intended for patio planters. The Conference pear fruited for the first time last year but lost all of its undersized fruit before ripening.

April, Week 4

I have removed the Conference Pear. It never grew properly and seemed to suffer all manner of disease. This year it looked like maybe we’d get some decent growth, but the blossoms did not open, remained only 1-2mm in closed bud, and rotted in place without ever opening. When I pulled the tree up the roots were so underdeveloped that I managed to pull the tree to by hand with little to no effort.
